U.S. 89 construction is anticipated to begin spring 2020 and extend through 2023. The project will fully reconstruct and widen U.S. 89 to 6 lanes between Main Street in Kaysville and S.R.193 in Layton. The project will also build two bridges and four interchanges over U.S. 89, extend the frontage road system and add a new 3-mile extension of Gordon Avenue to connect with U.S. 89.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS
U.S. 89:
The new U.S. 89 interchange at 200 North in Fruit Heights/400 North in Kaysville is expected to open to traffic by Monday morning, August 2. The interchange will open with new on- and off-ramps connecting 200 North/400 North to U.S. 89.
The U.S. 89 travel lanes will remain narrowed and in a temporary configuration while the bridges at Nicholls Road and Crestwood Road are constructed through 2023. The speed limit will remain 55 mph. Some finish work at the interchange remains through 2021, but all major traffic movements and access will be available.
This interchange is the first of four to be built over U.S. 89 and marks a major project milestone. This will eliminate one traffic signal on U.S. 89 which has been a major contributor to congestion on this route. Approximately one mile of U.S. 89 was also reconstructed at a lower depth near this location. The interchanges at Oak Hills Drive and Gordon Avenue will open later this summer, along with an additional two miles of reconstructed highway.
Additional project features including the Antelope Drive interchanges and bridges at Nicholls Road and Crestwood Road, and an additional three miles of reconstructed highway will open in 2023.
ONGOING ACTIVITIES AND IMPACTS
- Cherry Lane/Gordon Avenue Area: Trucks are hauling dirt and entering/exiting U.S. at various locations in this area. Please be aware, slow down and move over when you see a truck entering the highway. Please do not follow trucks into the work zone.
- Oak Hills Drive Area: One-way traffic operations are ongoing on Eastside Drive from approximately Adams Canyon to South Village Lane throughout the spring and early summer. Please pay attention to the signal.
- 200 North/400 North Area: Trucks are hauling dirt from north to south near 200 North/400 North in Fruit Heights and entering/exiting U.S. 89 at various locations. Please be aware, slow down and move over when you see a truck entering the highway. Please do not follow trucks into the work zone.
- Crews will relocate over 1.5 million cubic yards of dirt around the project area during the project. That is enough to fill Disney’s Epcot Center 20 times over. Please expect trucking operations throughout construction.
- UTA has closed bus stops directly on U.S. 89 but will continue service from the park and ride lots at Antelope Drive in Layton and 200 North/400 North in Fruit Heights.
Throughout construction, two lanes will be maintained in each direction on U.S. 89 during peak travel times. Nighttime and Sunday daytime lane closures are planned. Work will occur around the clock to reduce the overall project duration.
