UDOT to open several big mountain passes

Cedar Breaks, Monte Cristo, East Canyon and Guardsman Pass seasonal roads scheduled to open

The Utah Department of Transportation will open several seasonal roads this week.

State Route 148 in Cedar Breaks National Monument opened May 13. Crews were also able to open SR-65 from East Canyon to Emigration Canyon by Thursday, May 15. Monte Cristo Highway (SR-39) is scheduled to be open by 8 a.m. Friday, May 16.

Guardsman Pass (SR-190 and SR-224), which runs east from Brighton to Park City, is scheduled to open the morning of Tuesday, May 20, at 8 a.m. Crews had hoped to open it a day earlier but were forced to delay due to weather.

Due to their high elevations, these seasonal roads can be hit with extreme snowfall in a matter of hours. When UDOT closes these highways, they remain out of service until at least spring.

Winter maintenance on the roads is expensive and because of the chances of a swift, incoming heavy snowstorm, motorist safety is a concern during the winter months. Seasonal roads typically close from late November through May, but sometimes heavy snow forces closures to last longer.

Wolf Creek Summit opened in late April. To check the status of all of UDOT’s seasonal roads, visit udottraffic.utah.gov/seasonalroads.
