Traffic Operations Data Sources

Comparison of Point and Probe Data

Traffic Monitoring Stations (Point data)

UDOT has over 720 Traffic Monitoring Stations (TMS) installed on state roads, concentrated in urban areas. These sensors collect vehicle speed, volume and classification data by lane, including ramps.

The primary purpose of the TMS sensors is to provide real-time data to UDOT’s ramp meters, Express Lanes system, and travel time messaging on Variable Message Signs and UDOT Traffic maps. This data is also used extensively for traffic operations analysis and transportation planning.

Data from TMS can be accessed through the Freeway PeMS website. Click here to apply for an account.

Statewide Speed Data (Probe data)

UDOT purchases aggregated speed data for all state roads.

This data is used for traffic operations analysis and travel time messaging on Variable Message Signs and UDOT Traffic maps.

This data is available through the ClearGuide website. Access is currently limited to UDOT staff and consultants working on UDOT projects.
